Visual effects and compositing

Compositing combines footage, graphics, backgrounds or CG renders into a finished shot. Perspective, lighting, shadows, edges, colour and movement need to work together so the added elements belong in the image. The treatment may be natural or deliberately stylised, depending on the creative brief.

A useful brief identifies what needs to be added, removed or replaced in each shot. For a moving camera, discuss tracking and the reference material available. For cleanup or screen replacement, identify the affected areas and any reflections or foreground movement. These requirements help establish the approach and feasibility before production begins.

Plan the shot before production

• Source footage: provide the original files and the current edit, with timecodes for the relevant shots.
• Creative references: show the intended look and explain which parts matter most.
• Integration: identify any 3D elements, graphics or backgrounds that need to fit the shot.
• Delivery: specify resolution, frame rate, duration, deadline and required versions.

If filming has not started, discuss the effects brief early. Camera movement, available reference material and the way a scene is captured can change the work needed later.
